Causes and Symptoms of Cracked Teeth

Today’s stress-filled life causes many of us to clench and grind our teeth and, sadly, that can cause fractures, which are the worst issue we currently treat. Tiny cracks cause nerves to become sensitive and make your teeth flex. As cracks widen, bacteria can get into your tooth and can cause infection. We first examine the cracked tooth microscopically to determine the extent of the crack as well as the exact location. We then prepare minor, superficial cracks for immediate restorative treatment by your dentist.

If a crack is extensive and jeopardizes a successful prognosis, we may discuss extraction and replacement options with you and your dentist. If only the surface is chipped or cracked, a filling or reattachment usually restores the tooth. But if the pulp is exposed then an experienced Buffalo endodontist probably will need to perform a root canal.  The common symptoms for cracked teeth include discomfort while breathing or drinking hot or cold fluids or other foods.

Home Remedies for Cracked Teeth

You absolutely need to get to the doctor if you suspect that you cracked your tooth, but in the meantime, there are things you can do to relieve the pain. You may be experiencing some bleeding. If that happens, and you don’t have gauze laying around the house, use a tea bag to put pressure on the area. This will help stop the bleeding.

Place an ice pack over the area to soothe the pain and bring down the swelling in the area. Also, take a pain releiver if you want to further reduce swelling and minimize pain. You also have the option of picking up a kit for dental cement at the drugstore. This should only be used if you have to wait to see your dentist. These fillings last about a month, so be sure to get your appointment in within that time period.
