Dental Avulsion Explained

Dental Avulsion Explained | Buffalo Root Canal Dentist | Endodontist

Different types of trauma can occur to different parts of the body and different people depending on the type of injury they sustained. One common form of trauma is known as a dental avulsion and is a relatively unfamiliar term across the general population. Dental avulsion is defined as the complete displacement of the tooth, including the root, from the jawbone. This can be very painful and is considered a serious dental emergency. If your condition is not treated within the first hour, it is likely that you may deal with significant damage and potential future issues. Below, you’ll find a guide for dental avulsion, including both immediate care and treatment options from an endodontist.

What to Do For Dental Avulsion

If you’ve encountered the issue of dental avulsion, it is important to take immediate action. If immediate care is not administered, your endodontist may need to perform significant emergency measures. At first sign of dental avulsion, it is important to remain calm and locate an emergency endodontist. This can be a significantly stressful situation, but acting on stress will only make the situation worse. Locate the tooth and pick it up only by the crown, which is the white part. If you touch the root, damage to the nerves could occur.

Rinse off the tooth under cold water for less than 10 seconds and replant the tooth by putting it in place and biting on something like a handkerchief or towel. This is strongly encouraged but may be painful and there are some individuals who are discouraged from doing so. If this is the case, place the tooth in a container filled with milk. Milk is a source of calcium and can ensure the tooth remains viable. Avoid storing the tooth in water. Head to the emergency endodontist as soon as possible. How an Endodontist Can Help

Once at the endodontist office, they can help replant the tooth if it is still viable. If you were able to replant the tooth yourself, the process is significantly easier for you and them. After cleaning the area and suturing any open cuts or damage done by the avulsion, they will confirm the tooth is in its normal position and apply a splint to the tooth. Antibiotics will be administered, and after approximately a week of the splint being on, a root canal treatment can occur. If the tooth was not replanted and it’s been stored in milk, your endodontist will clean the area and the tooth, give you local anesthetics, and slowly replant your tooth.

They will give you antibiotics and a splint for the tooth that will remain on for up to two weeks. After a week of the splint being on, root canal treatment can begin without the removal of the splint. If the tooth was not in milk or solution, or if there are nonviable cells involved, treatment is the same as the previous, except the root canal can either be performed before or after implantation. A splint will be administered for up to four weeks. While replantation will occur, it is likely that ankylosis will as well, which is the improper fusion and stiffening of the bone where reattached. Regardless of the treatment you receive, our endodontist can help you through the case you have.
